Your background
All ages are welcome

This is a family course and all ages are welcome, especially children and teenagers - please see the prices page for details about discounts.
Ability
The course is not for complete beginners, although knowledge of traditional music is not required. The absolute minimum requirement is that you know one end of your instrument from the other (!) and you can play at least one tune before you arrive (see the tunes page if you don't know any!). However, most people will get more out of the course if they are more advanced than this. Participants on the Guitar or Accordion course should be familiar with playing some chords too.
The maximum standard is virtuoso! The teaching on this course has been described as second to none, so everyone will learn something!
Reading music
If you can't read music, don't worry as most tutors teach by ear.
If you rely on the dots, don't worry as the tutors will introduce you to learning by ear.
If you've never played by ear before, it's not as hard as it sounds! Try the link for some advice.
If you're new to folk music, e.g. you are classically trained, the course will provide a good introduction to traditional music.
Check out our tips page for some ideas on how you can prepare!
Style of music
The style of music taught varies with the tutors. All backgrounds - including classical - are welcome. Session tunes have included: traditional and modern; Irish, Shetland, Scottish, English, Scandinavian, Swedish and French/Breton.
